Appointment Outline

During the first appointment, the fundamental components of a comprehensive approach to weight reduction will be discussed. The weight loss program is evidence based.  The patient must decide if he or she is willing to make health behavior changes needed to create a caloric deficit and to commit to a weight reduction program that lasts 6 months in order to lose 10% of his or her weight. The patient will complete a questionnaire during the visit, and this will be reviewed by the physician.  The patient should complete the list of motivators and barriers immediately when they go home and  find creative ways to minimize, remove, or go around barriers that will prevent successful weight loss. The patient will also be asked to complete a detailed ten day food diary in preparation for the second office visit. The patient’s past medical history will be reviewed with the patient and the basal metabolic index and daily caloric deficit will be determined.

The second appointment is focused on introducing simple dietary tools so the patient can reduce calories without creating a condition of deprivation or boredom, both of which might lead to short-term weight loss at best. We review the 10 day food diary and the "Battle in the Mind" which includes the various barriers and motivators the patient may face in their attempt to lose weight. We discuss the "CAMES" approach, create a caloric deficit, and introduce the caloric and physical activity log.

The third appointment is dedicated to introducing physical activity and behavioral changes, both of which are vital to losing weight. The "Pass" dietary prescription will be reviewed.
